How much do you know about the TDS value of water quality testing?

Jul 22, 2022

TDS is the abbreviation of "Total dissolved solids", which simply and bluntly: "the total amount of various solid substances that can be dissolved in water".

TDS value

TDS is measured in milligrams per liter (mg/L), which indicates how many milligrams of dissolved solids are contained in 1 liter of water, including soluble salts (calcium ions, magnesium ions, etc.), ionic organics (ammonium acetate, sodium sulfate, etc.) ), some heavy metal ions (chromium, zinc, lead, copper, etc.).

A higher TDS value means more dissolved matter in the water.

Can TDS judge water quality?

Not necessarily! There are as many as 106 indicators to measure the quality of water quality, and TDS is only one of many indicators.

Qualified drinking water must meet the standards of comprehensive indicators such as turbidity, total number of bacterial colonies, number of microorganisms, heavy metal concentration and organic matter content.

Therefore, relying on the TDS water quality test alone cannot judge the quality of water quality.

Is the TDS value necessarily accurate?

In fact, it is also important to measure the TDS value of the pure water machine. If some external factors are ignored during the measurement, the measurement effect will be invalid.

Factors causing inaccurate TDS values:

 1. Water temperature

TDS pens cannot be used to measure high temperature water bodies. If the water temperature is too high, the calcium and magnesium ions in the water will combine with other substances, and the conductivity will increase, so the TDS value will also increase, which will affect the detection results.

2. Serious water pollution

Water bodies with higher pollution concentrations affect the measurement data. In some areas in my country with high TDS values, or individual groundwater reaching thousands, if the raw water is seriously polluted and exceeds the TDS threshold, the measurement results will also be affected.

3. Other influencing factors

 ①The newly installed machine, or the machine whose filter element has just been replaced, needs to be rinsed with water for 20-30 minutes before measuring;

②The pure water in the storage tank is stored for too long, which will also affect the measurement results.

TDS detects the total amount of dissolved solids. For RO reverse osmosis machines (that is, pure water machines), the removal of dissolved substances can reach 90%-98%. That is to say, the measured value of TDS can directly reflect the quality of water quality in pure water produced by RO reverse osmosis machine.
